How Smog in Lahore is Impacting Jobs

Smog directly influences the job market by impacting the workplace environment at nearly all levels.

1. Loss of Working Hours and Productivity:

Since exposure to smog causes respiratory infection, asthma, and other allergic diseases, more working hours are taken by the employees on sick leave. This results in the loss of working hours directly impacting productivity.

Organizations where a significant portion of workforces is on day-wages or shift staff will see a loss in productivity terms and face hindrances in smooth functioning, reducing profit of the employees and firm, respectively.

2. Effects on Outdoor and Field Jobs:

For any outside work to be carried, such as construction, transporting, or street vending; smog is the number one hindrance to smog. Hazardous work conditions arise due to lower air quality and the resulting poor visibility, either cut down the working time frame or have to postpone particular projects whenever high amounts of smog are witnessed in the sky.

These enterprises shorten shift hours and short working days, reducing revenues for workers while firms reduce losses.

3. Tourism and Hospitality Sector Decline:

Smog impacts the hospitality and tourism industry since tourists avoid traveling to Lahore during winter seasons when smog levels reach their peak. The hotel, restaurant, tour, and transport business decline due to low volumes of clients, which further affects the number of job opportunities for people who are relying on the tourism industry.

This decrease impacts employees directly since most tourism and hospitality companies would have to reduce their employees or lower their salaries to recover the lost income.

4. Increased Demand and Stress on Health Sector:

The health sector benefits from increased demand as people rush to the hospitals to seek medical care for smog-related diseases. The increased demand will lead to job opportunities in the health sector, for example, doctors, nurses, and pharmacists.

This still puts health services under a workload where personnel are stretched to the limit with burnout among health staff likely, and there is a large possibility of temporary or part-time recruitment that does not even guarantee job security amongst these employees.

5. Implications on Agriculture and Employment:

Smog is damaging crops and is disturbing agricultural activities that consequently lead to losing jobs. Poorer harvests bring poor cash earnings for the farmer as well, thereby indirectly bringing laborers with seasonal employments who earn by agribusiness.

It further disturbs people related to transportation chains and sellers at market areas as they too do not get sufficient amounts from consumer demand that goes lesser on higher food prices along with lesser supply.

6. Factory and Manufacturing Issues:

Manufacturing plants, even those with open ventilation or bad air-cleaning facilities, are not immune to indoor air pollution from smog. This means workers' health can be adversely affected and even slow down production or reduce the number of employees working in the plant for security reasons.

Companies will face increased costs to maintain workplace safety, which may lead to layoffs or reduced hiring. This is why hundreds of factory workers are currently unemployed and at home.

7. Changing Job Preference and Increased Need for Working Remotely:

Some of them are afraid to work out in the open on a regular basis as it carries the risk of health diseases; hence they prefer such indoor or remote jobs, increasing the demand on employers for work from remote locations, although this may not be feasible for every type of job, hence leaving the other sectors facing a scarcity of laborers.

There could be some jobs in those businesses that could go into remote work, but it is hard to get people and retain them for those sectors that are in person.

8. Environmental and Green Jobs:

As the problem of air quality gains momentum, people are demanding a role like environmental protection, monitoring of air quality, sustainable urban planning, and control of pollution. Organizations and government agencies are investing in the talent that will help them tackle such environmental issues; therefore, new roles appear in this space.

In summary, Lahore's smog makes this a very challenging environment for some job markets, especially for those based on outdoor or manual labor. Even as it has created some job opportunities in the health and environmental sectors, the net effect of jobs is poor due to lower productivity, reduced tourism, and difficulties with agriculture and manufacturing. There is a need, then, to stabilize the job market in Lahore by finding solutions to the smog crisis to provide a much healthier working environment for everyone.
